Start a new family tradition

Make a family Gratitude Jar—and a new favorite memory.

Last year, my kids were thankful for everything from people and places to sunshine and Play-Doh. I can't wait to see what gratitudes they write (and draw, and scribble) this year!

Mason jar, tin can, or tissue box
Stickers, paints, jewels, and any other embellishments
Strips of construction paper
Pens or pencils

1. Let your kids decorate the jar, can, or box any way they like. Put it in a place where everyone in the family will see it.

2. Whenever you think of something you're thankful for, write it on a strip of paper and put it in the jar. Encourage your kids to write one gratitude per day. (If they can't write, ask them to draw a picture.)

3. On Thanksgiving, pull the papers out of the jar and read each gratitude aloud to the family, one at a time. Watch your kids' faces light up as they think about all the wonderful people, places and things in their lives!
